It’s about time that Ultimate Frisbee had its own sports medicine website! Injuries are common and even though Ultimate Frisbee is technically non-contact, the sport has a similar injury profile to contact sports such as soccer and basketball.
Sports Medicine and Ultimate have been my passion throughout my medical training. I started writing the Injury Timeout column in Ultimate News in 2006. Positive feedback from the Ultimate community encouraged me to continue writing articles as well as to create this website.
My goals are two-fold. First, I would like to encourage teams to adopt training programs that prevent injuries. Second, I would like to encourage teams to have at least one member that could manage common injuries immediately and appropriately.
I plan for this website to be an educational resource for Ultimate players and teams. It will include resources for creating a training program, information on preventing injuries, and articles that address the management and rehabilitation of common Ultimate Frisbee injures.
There will also be a forum where people can post comments and questions. June Srisethnil and I will choose topics from the forum to address in monthly blog postings.
This website is just part of my plan to reach my goals to educate the Ultimate community. Of course there is the Ultimate News column that comes out quarterly and was the inspiration for this website name. I am also in the process of reviewing and improving the UPA Coaching Manual Sports Medicine and Training sections for 2009. I have been awarded an Innovation Grant for this project. Additionally, June Srisethnil and I spoke about Ultimate Injuries, Management, and Prevention at the annual Ultimate Coaches and Players Conference (UCPC) in Boston this January 2008. Our presentation is available online at www.buda.org/ucpc thanks to the conference coordinators George Cooke and Tiina Booth.
I could not have created this website without the expertise of Shaun Webb. He graciously volunteered so many hours of work to design this website. All the cool features are Shaun's design; my contributions are only the words.
I would like to sincerely thank Sierra “Link” Simmons for her unwavering support of the Injury Timeout column. She has contributed illustrations for all my articles as well as writing two articles as the primary author: Shin Splints and Sports Nutrition. I could not have done the column without her help.
A special thanks to June Srisethnil for agreeing to add her expertise to this website and for encouraging me to attend the 2008 UCPC conference in Boston. She will be a great resource with her work in Sports Medicine physical therapy.
Thanks so much for Daniel "Bones" Brady for helping to lay the groundwork for this project. His encouragement and enthusiasm are much appreciated.
Also thanks to the UPA for supporting my work through the column in their magazine and the awarding of a 2008 Innovation Grant. They have also graciously released the PDF files of the Injury Timeout column free of charge to be made available through this website.
Zeitgeist, thanks for providing the sweet Ultimate action shots and the opportunity to play at the highest level of Women’s Ultimate!
